Testing the Crankshaft Position Sensor
Permalink

Hi All, New to the forum. Just picked up a "new to me" 2011 WR250R...that does not start. I did see it running last year.Last time it got used, it left home by starting with the button. Then it would only start by bump starting. Bump starting got harder. Then it sat for about 5 months.

When I got it on Monday:

  • The bike would crank, but not start.
  • The LED display & headlights did not work unless we tried to bump it.
  • Fixed the LED & lights. Ran the diag mode.
  • Lean sensor, Exup and Crankshaft Position faults came up. (codes 30, 17 & 12)
  • Checked & tested the lean sensor. It is fine. 0.6 when upright and 4.0 when on it's side.
  • Exup has been removed and it ran fine for years without it.
  • That leaves the Crankshaft Sensor.
  • Checked the battery. It is fine.
  • Checked the spark. It sparks. (I recognize that a spark does not necessarily mean ignition)
  • You can smell gas after I turn it over. Occasional pop happens in the can.
  • I have the manual. It walks you through testing the sensor. Is there a way to simply pull the sensor and test it to see if it works by using a simple multi meter?
  • Any other thoughts as to what code 12 may be from.
  • Any ideas on how to get in and pull the sensor? It is in a very tight location and I have big hands!

Thanks in advance for your brilliant ideas.

L.
