Clutch slipping

Hello to one and all,

Long time no see, but with a year packed full of riding trips taking me out to places like Cambodia and Andalucia to mention a few, i just couldn't seem to find the time to chime in now and then. A very happy new year to you all.

Still an avid WRR enthusiast, in fact maybe a little too much so as despite only having around 7,500 miles on the clock, my clutch appears to be slipping. I know i can ride a little hard at times but  i'm no motocross racer...lol. I do ride a fair mount of technical hill climbs and gnarly trails where i'm literally constantly feathering the clutch though.

What I found was when returning from a 200 mile TRF day out this week, on my route back down some freeway home, as i pulled hard on the throttle to make the higher gear changes, each time the revs built just before the shift was about to be made, the clutch would start slipping.

So my question is this, simple case of changing the clutch plates and springs, or anything else to consider first? (BTW oil level seems fine and only recently replaced).

Much thanks to anyone that shouts back and again, happy new year to you all.

Paul.

Hi Paul - sounds like you are living life to the full!

Silly question but have you got the recommended amount of free play in the clutch cable?

If you have, then it sounds like you are going to need a new set of friction plates.

Brian

Hello Brian!

Great to see you’re still a committed die hard WRR fan.

...not a silly question at all. However i actually lubed the clutch cable and set the free play the evening before the 200 mile TRF day. A great day was had with no problems. Only when trying to get home in the cold, dark and fog did I find the issue as I began to wring the neck out of it in a bid to get back.

Sounds like my suspicions might be right and so it’s over to Steve at Totally TTRS for some new clutch plates and springs. Just very surprised as I see others riding their WRR’s just as hard, but not replacing clutch plates for 20k miles! Maybe I’ve been harder than I realise...smiles.

A very happy new year to you and hope that if you’re still in Spain, you’re enjoying some of those beautiful blue skies today.

Much thanks as always buddy,

Paul.

Hi Paul - a Happy New Year to you and everyone else tapping int the forum!

My WR250F is still in Spain with my son Matt whilst I am here in wintry Devon, UK. That said, it was a lovely day here today.

Not doing so much trail riding these days although I still have a road TTR250 and a trail TTR325. I also bought a 1958 BSA C15 250cc 4-stroke single a few months ago as a project and it has been a real learning experience wink

Best regards

Brian

I had a C15 in my YOOFF as a ride to work bike.  I fancy restoring one when I give up work (countdown begun!).  I had a Matchless 350cc single for a couple of years but sold it a while back as it was not inspiring enough.

Hi Steve!

You have highlighted one of the issues with the C15 in that most were owned back in the day by "yoofs" who ragged them to death and did the most horrendous bodges to keep them going through lack of money and/or mechanical ability no

My example seems to have escaped most of that.

My favourite is a BSA A10 Golden Flash - 650cc parallel twin - great British goodness and what a lovely soundtrack accompanies it  wink   I had one as a teenager after a succession of Lambrettas. Lovely bike and will probably be with me long after the Ceefer has gone.

But.... I do hanker after a Panther - they are such great looking bikes with their sloped engine........

How much longer you gotta wait until you retire?

Hi Brian,

Mine was certainly bodged and buggered to keep it running.  Better things to spend money on back then.  Mainly beer!

It retire in November this year.  Plan to stay on in a different role just 2 days a week.  If I don't like that, I'll jack it in altogether.  It's not the money I need, but the sense of purpose.  Having said that, you seem to be managing ok.

Once Ive got the time on my hands, perhaps I'll pop over your way.

Cheers,

Steve
