The article suggest that the recall only affects American models. Anyone know if the UK model is unaffected for sure?

I had a quick reply and, yes, my WR250R is affected cry

Hi Brian 

Yes it is affected - you will need to contact a Yamaha Dealer with your machines details and they will be able to claim for the part and get their labour paid.

mad.gif  Grrrrrrr. I really am sorry your bike is affected Brian.

I must be honest, i heard about the recall a week or so ago and didn't want to panic anyone as it appeared to be isolated to around 12,000 bikes and in the States only.... or so i thought  cry.

When i saw the bad batch VIN list, i didn't think my bike was within it. Just to be safe though, as you've been so kind to stick up the info Brian, i've emailed Yamaha my number to double check.

Kick on Yamaha for covering parts and labour though thumbsup.gif. Customer service like that wants me to stay with them for many more years to come smile.

I got a recall letter for mine a few weeks ago, I have recently traded the bike in so have passed it on to the next owner!

I would like to think that Yamaha UK would have contacted DVLA for a list of current owners for the affected VIN numbers especially as your WRR/X catching fire (unlikely I know) whilst you are riding it could cause a bit of a nasty!

Did you have your bike from new Adam? Just wondering how Yamaha got your address. 

Maybe my letter is in the post wink

My WR250R is running perfectly at the moment and I worry slightly about letting someone else work on it - maybe the job will be given to an apprentice or whatever. However, I guess I would need to have some proof that the work was done if I ever came to sell it.....

I bought the bike from a dealers as an ex demo so they must have logged my details with Yamaha as I received a very official recall letter from Yamaha. Quite pleased it came after I sold the bike as it's 90 mile trip to the dealer I bought the bike from or about 50 miles to the nearest other dealer which is in the middle of Leeds!

....Argh ! I can't believe it, mine IS affected! Having dropped Yamaha an email with my VIN number, i also now have to find a reputable dealer that i can trust to work on my machine...doh cry.

A second concern is how to approach a dealer. I feel like i'm just some guy off the street expecting free parts and labour smile. Will Yamaha really foot the bill??? If so, this seems like a really big deal and is going to seriously cost them worldwide. I hope it doesn't affect future production of our beloved WRs in an adverse way.

Any advice on how i should speak with a dealer is very much appreciated. Everything that comes up on the Yamaha dealer search over my way seems to be marine focused, not bikes. I suppose this would be a good start to get right first. Then maybe if an actual Yamaha bike garage, they would just call HQ and get the low down on the issue, verifying my requests.

 

As i final thought, this i guess will now be something to ask and check whenever purchasing a WRR/ X in the future....."Did you check in with Yamaha during the stator recall of July 2015?" cry...If only common sense was applied like your DVLA suggestion Brian smile.

Mine's in the recall too.  I got a VERY prompt reply from Yamaha customer service.

Initially, my dealer Poole Motorcycles weren't aware of a recall, but a further e mail by myself to Yamaha customer service and they sorted it by contacting Poole m/cs and then getting back to me.

So far, I've been extremely impressed with it all. 

I've no issue with letting them loose on my bike.  They don't get dealerships without jumping through some hoops.

I've not been told about any cost, and I'm assuming it's free to me.  Good service indeed on a 5 year old bike.

Looking on other forums (US and Australia) it seems the insulation in the stator windings can break down when the bike gets very hot, leading to an electrical short and eventual flat battery.

Interestingly, Yamaha "think" my bike belongs to the original purchaser too.  I don't know why they can't access the DVLA database to find current owners.

I spoke to Bridge Garage in Exeter this morning to chase up my email and they are in touch with Yamaha to get the replacement stator and will contact me when it is in so that we can arrange for the work to be done. So far so good.

Just had Stator replaced at local dealer - Yamaha covered costs apart from replacement oil.
As oil had to be drained to complete work I assumed that Yamaha would bear all costs................ (plus giving up half a day to drop bike off etc.)
Dealer did offer to re-use original oil if I didn't want pay for new!

...Cheers for the heads up on the oil Pikey. I should have thought of that as i was just about to do an oil change soon. Will now hold off a few weeks until the stator is replaced biggrin

Mine is going in for the work to be done next Wednesday. I asked whether there would be any cost to me such as for oil and was reassured that it would all be done free of charge including the new oil.

Guess it's down to the quality of dealer! Didn't buy bike through him and don't usually frequent shop (buy most consumables from Totally) and not likely to in future.

Just picked up mine from Bridge Garage - all done - no charges biggrin

They weren't going to give me any paperwork but Jeremy on Reception kindly printed off the "Warranty Claim Summary" showing that a new stator had been fitted so I have a bit of paper to wave about if I ever sell her.

My mate Olly is not well so I offered to check his 2008 WR250R with the Yam database today and, surprise surprise, its another recall. 100% so far that I know of.

I've got my bike back too.  No charge for oil as they didn't drain it.  They said they leant the bike over!!  Not what I expected from a main dealership.

No paperwork either until I pushed a bit, and eventually got them to write out a job sheet and give me a copy. It's not ideal but it will have to do.

I just picked up my wr250r from the dealer—and after reading this thread—wish I would have asked for a receipt of work performed. I'll have to reach out to them and see if they can provide me a document. No charge for repair or oil, but not having my bike for over a week was terrible. Although she's running great, and I'm off to the Texas desert!

Hello from the UK Yoshi,

Most dealers seemed happy to hand write and stamp a bit of headed paper to say work was performed. You should have no problem.

Oil seems to have just been recycled into a pan and back in again though... can't blame 'em i suppose biggrin.

Just got mine back from the dealer. All seems to be good. Fantastic service from Yamaha don't think KTM would be doing recalls five years after purchase. (or even ten minutes after purchasing the bike)

just read the re-call posts i bought my wr in the uk in 2010 it is a 08 model will have to check with the dealer in malta to see if my bike needs to be taken in i dont think i will have much luck though also i wont be back in malta for another 4 weeks this will be intresting now as the bike is an export we had a ford transit from the uk with a recall and fords in malta didnt want to know we got it sorted in the end but it wasnt easy thanks for the heads up keep you informed

Just got a reply from Yamaha and mine is also affected so it's off to the local Yamaha dealer to see if he will assist 😞 Good bit is that Yamaha uk confirmed it was imported from America which is what I thought as it had a silver frame.
